Summer 2004 - Vol. 18 ~ No. 2
Last month Dick Tuttle hosted the Spring OBBA Meeting at the
Ohio Wildlife Center near Delaware Ohio. It was a great meeting
attended by over 25. The highlight of the day was our trip to
the Columbus Zoo to visit with Kelly Vineyard. Kelly told us
about the Zoo’s captive breeding program. (Check out the
next OBBA newsletter issue for an article by Kelly about the
program!). Although the weather was a bit chilly, it was
nice to go on a field trip as part of the meeting and view some
nice birds in captivity that we usually see in the wild. We were
also free to tour the Columbus Zoo after Kelly’s presentation. Another point of interest, to me at least, was our walk
around the premises of the OWC to view some nesting birds in the
barn, and a new structure under construction. This mammoth
structure was a skeleton of a barn at first glance. At closer
inspection we were walking about the new Eagle barn. The long
section of the barn is long enough for the Eagle to fly a good
distance with fully opened wings. The section of the barn angled
at 90 degrees in the shape of an "L" was large enough
for the bird to make a complete right turn in flight allowing
the utilization of muscles not used in "straight line
flight". A quite impressive and state-of-the-art structure!
Thanks Dick for making the arrangements and hosting the meeting. Spring migration is upon us. To "kick off" the
season, 7 banders and a handful of guests/volunteers gathered in
Hocking Hills for the OBBA Spring Bandout. The weather was
mostly cooperative this year and we all had a great time. Jeff
Hays continues to compile the Bandout Data. When Jeff receives
all the data, there should be an article in the newsletter, or a
spot on the OBBA website with the info. We would like to have other data to include in future
newsletters and perhaps a dedicated page on the website for
folks to browse. Feel free to send me an update on your banding
station, i.e. something as simple as: a good day, a rare bird,
an old bird, a funny experience, or as in-depth as complete
charts of species, recaps, etc., etc., and I will forward it to
our newsletter editor The Ohio Avian Ecology and Conservation Conference is fast approaching. The registration form and agenda are enclosed in the newsletter. OBBA is one of the sponsors and will have a display set up for the guests to visit. This is the 2nd year for the conference and it appears to include some very good talks. Mark your calendars. Stop by the OBBA display and let us know you were there. Good luck to everyone with their Migration and M.A.P.S. banding this season!
