Fall 2003 - Vol. 18 ~ No. 3

Spring migration and M.A.P.S. have passed, and fall migration is upon us. My station at Gilmore Ponds in Fairfield, Butler County, yielded it’s most successful year in number of birds captured, number of species, and, most importantly, volunteer involvement. Now I know what it feels like to those of you who have been banding for many, many years and have a good recurrence of dependable help. Best of luck to everyone banding this fall!

On the topic of the newsletter: Several requests have been made to include post 1997 M.A.P.S. banding data of OBBA members in the newsletter. The deadline suggested was for the fall issue of the newsletter. Both are great ideas! August is a good time for data submission since articles have been scarce this time of year. Let’s make M.A.P.S. data an annual submission on August 1 of each year. (Nov. 1 of this year) Later we can consider other data as well. Of the 17 years of newsletters I have collected, I only found a handful of issues including banding data. These articles were interesting to review. I wonder how the data compares to current data?! Thanks again for the input. Keep the ideas coming, even if it is a "bringing back of" something done previously. If you liked it, someone else probably will and therefore it has a right to be included in the newsletter of the members!

Suggested "additional" data to submit for any issue of the newsletter:

1. New Species/Captures and quantity banded/captured 2. Any noteable longevity records/recaptures (w/ or w/out band number)

3. Rare birds/species 4. Any photos of the various aspects of banding, or of those rare birds!

I await with great anticipation your M.A.P.S. data by Nov. 1, 2003! (Submit data in Works, Access, Excel, Word Perfect, Word, photocopies, hand written, faxed if you call first, e-mailed, etc. ...) Thanks in advance!

Next year, 2004, will be the 20th year of the OBBA "Spring Bandout". If you have attended the Bandout one or more times since its inception (?1984?), mark your calendars for the last full weekend in April to help commemorate the 20th year and be a part of a long awaited reunion! Data from the first 20 years will appear in the Fall 2004 newsletter.

A warm welcome and "thanks for joining" to new 2003 members. To date, they are: Lewis Derr, Patti Grauel, Tonya Kieffer, Bob Placier, Deborah Plotts, Matthew Plotts, Sandra Reed, and Daniel Webb. Welcome aboard!

See you at the meeting in September!
