Migration Banding Station near Cleveland, Ohio - Cuyahoga County

Study Purpose: The purpose of this study is to document the land bird populations in the Brook Trail and All People’s Trail area of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes (NCSL) during spring and fall migration.

Status: The study began in spring of 2001 and will continue at least through fall of 2005.  Through fall of 2003, 94 species have been banded and 140 species have been recorded during banding operations.

Study Location: Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, 2600 South Park Blvd., Shaker Hts, Ohio (eastern suburb of Cleveland, Ohio) 

Study Methodology: Scientific protocol is used which includes point count, banding, and checklist of all birds seen or heard in study area during banding operations.

Banding Periods: Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings from mid April – first week in June and mid August – mid October.

Volunteer Duties: Carry bags holding birds, weigh birds, record data, help close nets

Volunteer Opportunities: You will have an opportunity to learn about bird banding techniques and see resident and migrating birds at close range. Individuals interested in volunteering should contact Julie West.

Volunteer Requirements: Arrive no later than 45 minutes after sunrise.  Banding will be completed between Noon and 1:30 depending on number of birds captured. Plan to assist for the entire time on day you volunteer.  Exceptions can be made if known in advance.

Conditions: Net checks include crossing Doan Brook and walking in marsh where water can be high (mid/upper calf).  Wear high boots.

Visitors: Individual observers are welcome.  Study area is compact, so advance notice is requested for groups.
